Honda confirms Civic Wagon for Europe

Honda CEO Takanobu Ito already confirmed that the Civic Type R will be making a return in 2015, and today at the Paris Motor Show, Honda's European president, Manabu Nishimae, announced another new Civic variant is being added into the mix with a new wagon-style model. Throughout the press release, Honda puts quotation marks over the word wagon, but based on the design sketch, it will indeed have more of a station wagon look to it compared to the current Euro-spec Civic hatchback.

Just going off what we can see in Honda's teaser image, the biggest change appears to be the longer, flatter roofline and the more upright D-pillar. Most of the sketch matches up with the current Civic on sale in Europe from the short, sloped hood to the hidden rear door handles, but behind the rear doors is where all the changes will be made. Honda says this sketch is a glimpse at a concept car that we will be seeing at some point next year.

The Civic hasn't offered a station wagon body style in the U.S. since its fourth generation (1987 through 1991 model years), but just like the Type R, the Civic Wagon will be a Europe-only affair.

2013 Honda CR-Z is a greener shade of purple

2013 Honda CR-Z

Honda has failed to set the world on fire with its seemingly sporty hybrid coupe, but it's not entirely for lack of effort. And for 2013, the Japanese automaker is refining its CR-Z with a host of updates designed to pin its dynamics a bit more on the side of sporty performance. And, as you can see above, it's now 100-percent more purpley than before.

First up is the drivetrain. The European-spec 2013 CR-Z features more power than last year, though its 1.5-liter engine and electric motor combo are just as clean and fuel efficient. A new engine computer and revised variable valve timing conspire to bump horsepower from 114 to 121. A lithium ion battery pack - a first for the CR-Z - and revised electric motor add another 20 horses, up from 114 in 2012.

Combined, Honda rates its 2013 CR-Z at 137 metric horsepower (a 13-horse boost) and 140 pound-feet of torque (up 16). The run to 60 mph drops 0.7 seconds to 9.0 flat, with top speed sitting at 124 miles per hour. To help the driver harness the extra horses, Honda has fitted the 2013 CR-Z with a new Plus Sport button on the steering wheel, and if the battery is at least 50-percent full, a push of the S+ button engages additional electric boost for up to ten seconds.

On the outside, the 2013 CR-Z is chiefly identifiable by its redesigned fascia, grille and headlamps with LED strips. At the rear, a new diffuser is a subtle update. Inside, Honda has switched up the fabrics and textures and has added LED lighting.

Fuel mileage stands pat at 56.4 miles per gallon on the European combined cycle; we'll have to wait for official U.S. figures from the EPA, which we ought to have before the 2013 CR-Z goes on sale in January. Check out our live gallery above and the official press release below.

Cheaper baby NSX back under consideration at Acura

2012 Acura NSX Concept - front three-quarter view, on show stand in Detroit

Back in the salad days before the financial upheaval of 2008, Honda's Acura division was reportedly planning to build not one, but two new NSX models. The first was/is the on again off again heir to the NSX throne (then a V10 rear-drive supercar, now the much ballyhooed hybrid all-wheel-drive affair revealed at January's Detroit Auto Show). The second was to be a smaller, less expensive version, creatively dubbed by Honda internals as the "Small NSX." Never let engineers name your pets, folks.

In any event, the Small NSX that was said to be cancelled before we even knew it existed is reportedly back on the table. Unnamed sources tell Motor Trend that the sports car will really be a scaled-back version of the NSX, too, with a mid-engine layout and potentially a version the same hybrid SH-AWD system.

It is really anyone's guess as to which corporate powertrain will offer motivation, should this baby NSX see the light of day, though turbocharging one of the company's four-cylinder mills seems like a good bet.

With the full-boat NSX still on track for a debut in 2015, expect to wait quite a while before the junior version is available - 2017 is a reasonable guess. When the car is ready, pending another once-in-a-lifetime financial system meltdown, we are told to expect sticker prices in the realm of $50,000 to $60,000.

Honda CEO confirms return of Civic Type R, announces new Fit-based CUV and super sports bike

With a goal of earning 39 million global customers across its power equipment, automobile and motorcycle line of products by 2017, Honda CEO Takanobu Ito announced a handful of exciting new models for the latter two that range from high performance to fuel efficient. While the U.S. news was essentially limited to the confirmation that the Acura RLX will be debuting in production form at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show, Honda fans in Europe have a lot more to look forward to.

After a five-year hiatus, Ito confirmed that the Honda Civic Type-R (pictured above) would be returning to Europe in 2015. No details were revealed about this high-output Civic, but Ito did mention that Honda's goal is to make the new Type-R the "fastest front-wheel-drive vehicle on the Nürburgring" where we've already seen the car testing. The Euro-spec Civic Type-R went out of production in 2010 due to stricter European emissions standards. No word as to whether the new Civic Type-R would eventually be offered in the U.S., but don't hold your breath.

Also headed to the European market is the upcoming subcompact crossover based on the next-generation Honda Fit/Jazz. The new Honda Fit will debut next year, and Honda says the crossover version will go on sale within two years. Both of these products will be built at Honda's all-new assembly plant near Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico.

In addition to Europe and the U.S., Automotive News reports that Honda is also looking to expand its lineup in China and India with up to 10 new or updated models in China by 2016 and a new diesel model for India in 2014.

Ito didn't just limit the news to future cars, either, as he announced that the motorcycle division of Honda will be introducing a new super sports bike based on the Honda's MotoGP racing bike. No additional information was available about this motorcycle, but Ito did say that it would be similar to the VFR750R homologation bike that was made in limited numbers from 1987 through 1990.

General Motors and Volkswagen may benefit from anti-Japan protests in China

China protestors against Japan

The unrest in China may have positive consequences for automakers like Volkswagen and General Motors, according to Automotive News. As protesters continue their streak of violence, many owners of Japanese vehicles are leaving them home for fear of damage. Protesters have vandalized Japanese businesses and those that sell Japanese goods, including car dealerships, as well personal property. Reports indicate some owners are swapping their Toyota badges for those of Chinese automaker BYD in hopes of fooling vandalism-minded mobs.

Nissan, Toyota and Honda have all reported attacks on their dealerships, and China's Passenger Car Association has predicted Japanese automakers may lose their market lead to those based in the U.S. and Germany. General Motors sold a total of 1.84 million vehicles in China under a total of three brand names, while Volkswagen moved 1.49 million units this year. By comparison, Nissan has sold just 485,000 vehicles.

The protests mark the 81st anniversary of the Manchurian Incident, which saw Japanese forces invade China.

Honda Automobiles: North American Highlights of Mid-Year Speech by Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President & CEO Takanobu Ito

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President & CEO Takanobu Ito today (September 21,

2012) outlined the company's global and regional business goals in a mid-year

speech in Japan.

On a global basis, he revealed that in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017,

Honda expects to earn 39 million customers for its automobile, motorcycle and

power equipment products. This annual sales mark would include 25 million

motorcycles, 8 million power equipment products and 6 million automobiles. As

a point of reference, in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2012, Honda earned

more than 23.9 million customers around the world including: 15 million

motorcycles, 5.8 million power products and 3.1 million automobiles.

For a complete summary of the speech, please click here. Following is a

summary of key announcements related to North America:

Automobile Business:

Acura Brand:

The production model of the all-new Acura RLX sedan will debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show, November 28, 2012.

Honda Sub-Compact Vehicles

Within two years after the initial global market introduction of the all-new Fit

starting in 2013, Honda will globally roll-out Fit, City and a new compact SUV

model. Honda will begin producing Fit and a derivative model at the new plant in Mexico that will become operational in spring 2014.

New Fuel Cell Vehicle

Honda will launch an all-new fuel cell electric model in the U.S., Japan and

Europe starting in 2015. This new fuel cell vehicle will showcase further

technological advancement and significant cost reduction that Honda has

accomplished.

Hybrid Technology

Honda will further advance its "Earth Dreams Technology" in the coming years,

with the introduction of three new hybrid systems based on one-motor, two-motor and three-motor hybrid configurations.

  • One-motor: a lightweight and compact one-motor hybrid system will deliver

expanded EV driving range through the improvement of motor output and

battery performance as well as the combination with a newly-developed

transmission. Honda will strive to achieve number one fuel economy among

all hybrid vehicles by improving the efficiency of regenerative energy

    recovery.

  • Two-motor: following the U.S. introduction of the Accord Plug-in Hybrid

Electric (PHEV) model in early 2013, a two-motor hybrid Accord will be

introduced in the U.S., followed by Japan and other regions.

  • Three-motor: as previously announced, the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® (Super

Handling All Wheel Drive) system, a highly efficient and high-output threemotor

and the Acura NSX to realize both a high level of sporty handling and fuel

    economy.

Increased Regional Product Development of Automobiles

Honda will pursue "concurrent development by all six regions," where each

region participates in product development concurrently and at the same level

from the early stage of the development. Introducing the same model in all

regions within a short period of time will enable Honda to achieve adequate

production volume on a global basis from an earlier stage of the product

introduction, while significantly reducing the cost of parts sourcing.

NOTE: in August of this year, Honda announced that the company's U.S. R&D

operations will lead development of the North American version of the next

    generation Honda Civic.

    Motorcycle Business:

The first of a new series of large-sized models based on a new concept for both daily commuting & weekend touring will go on sale next year on a global basis, beginning from North America. Key characteristics will include stylish design, a "torqueful" engine, low seat height for a comfortable ride and high stability in maneuvering.

  • 2013 Honda CR-Z facelift revealed in Indonesia

2013 Honda CR-Z at its Indonesia reveal

We fully expected Honda to reveal its facelifted 2013 CR-Z hybrid at the Paris Motor Show next week, but instead, the Japanese automaker has brought its updated three-door to the Indonesia International Motor Show, and our friends at PaulTan.org were on hand to get the details.

And no, your eyes do not deceive you - this CR-Z has, in fact, been given a nip/tuck. The most obvious element that sets the 2013 model apart from earlier versions is a set of LED running lights tucked below the headlamps. A more pronounced lower front lip jutting underneath redesigned fog lamps is also new, as well as additional paint colors including the Premium Energetic Yellow Pearl finish seen here. Out back, a revamped diffuser has settled in, and other minor updates like new door mirrors and 17-inch alloys round out the changes.

The revised CR-Z still uses the same 1.5-liter inline-four with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology, and PaulTan.org reports that the engine is capable of putting down 118 horsepower with the six-speed manual or 116 hp with the Continuously Variable Transmission. The electric motor provides an additional 20-hp of oomph, but Honda has not released official combined output ratings just yet. Most intriguingly, there's a new Plus Sport System accessed through a Sport button in the cabin, but it's not yet clear what systems it holds sway over.

We'll get another look at the new CR-Z in Paris next week, but for now, head over to PaulTan.org for the details and scroll through the image gallery above to see the Energetic CR-Z in all its glory.

Band shoots music video in own cars, Honda surprises them with Jimmy Kimmel Live stunt

Monsters Calling Home band - video screencap

We'd like to believe that corporations have the ability to do something nice without an ulterior motive, that a company can just be good without angling for a bump in consumer sentiment, brand awareness or sales. This is not one of those times, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the "Honda Loves You Back" campaign is doing a bunch of nice things for Honda fans.

The latest involves the LA-based band Monsters Calling Home, which shot a couple of its music videos entirely in Hondas owned by various band members, proving that, yes, you can play a set of drums in the back of a Fit. Honda noticed one video in particular for the song "Fight to Keep" (below) and decided to love the band back with a special surprise. The band was lured to a location in LA under the ruse of playing the song live for a room of Honda executives, but the carmaker had other plans.

Instead, Monsters Calling Home was ushered across the street to the studio where ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live is taped. You can guess what happened next, or better yet, scroll down to watch the band's reaction to getting their big break courtesy of a carmaker.

Honda has done a few other things as part of its "Honda Loves You Back" campaign, including throwing a parade for a guy who drove his Accord over 1,000,000 miles and making Jack-o-Lanterns that feature customer faces. Are these actions entirely altruistic? No, and we played our part by even telling you about it, but we doubt recipients like Monsters Calling Home even care.

Honda butching up Crosstour for 2013 because 'people weren't exactly sure what it was'

    2013 Honda Crosstour

When the Honda Accord Crosstour launched back in 2009 as a 2010 model, we didn't quite know what to make of it. We weren't exactly taken with its styling and we didn't get its value equation, either. It drove well enough, but fell behind the segment's fierce competition in terms of space, amenities, visibility and pricing. The market seemed to agree, and the model never got near Honda's (traditionally conservative) sales projections of 40,000 units per year.

Since that time, Honda has tried to build momentum with the model by deleting its Accord appellation (it's now just "Crosstour") and adding a four-cylinder model, but sales haven't budged. Through August, Ward's Auto reports that Honda has managed to shift just 12,857 units, and its best-ever year, 2010, it only managed 28,851 units.

For 2013, the Crosstour is getting its biggest push since launch with its first major rework, and the logic behind the facelift is interesting. According to Ward's Auto, Honda believes that a major reason why the Crosstour has failed to find buyers is because people didn't know what to call it (or presumably, what to cross-shop it against). Honda marketed the model as a crossover, but as Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president-product planning opines, "people weren't exactly sure what it was (because) it was a tweener." So Honda responded by showing the thinly disguised 'concept' seen above at the New York Auto Show in April, and the showcar is expected to match the as-yet-unseen 2013 production model almost exactly. If that's the case, Honda will clearly butch up the five-door's lines for the new model year, with a squared-off jaw, bolder grille, contrasting lower cladding, and so on.

What's more, Honda is also addressing our criticism about a lack of amenities by giving the cabin a new eight-inch information display, revamped trim, keyless start and paddle shifters on the V6. In addition, the V6 model will receive a new six-speed auto in place of the 2012 model's five-speed unit. To combat the Crosstour's inherently poor visibility, Honda is fitting all models with a standard backup camera and its trick LaneWatch blind-spot system will be offered as an option.

Will these changes be enough to jumpstart the Crosstour's fortunes in the marketplace? Have your say in Comments.

Honda kicks off new Accord sales with configurator, new ad campaign [w/videos]

Honda has pulled the curtain back on its fully featured 2013 Accord configurator, and let us tell you, this large grouping of zeros and ones is positively sprinkled with wonderfulness. (That may be overselling it a bit - there are a lot of options though.)

The bread-and-butter sedan offers up no fewer than eight trim levels for the 2013 model year, with the most basic LX starting off the range at a reasonable $22,470 (once the $790 destination charge has been tacked on) and the Touring at the top of the charts with a $34,220 MSRP (with destination).

The LX up through the middle-tier EX-L are only available with Honda's 2.4-liter, 185-horsepower four-cylinder, while the top three trim levels are fitted with a 280-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine.

If you want Honda's very good six-speed manual with which to modulate your powertrain, you'll have to select from one of the three lower trims (LX, Sport and EX), and their attendant four-cylinder engines. The four-bangers can also be had with a CVT. All of the V6 cars are only available with a six-speed automatic trans.

Hey, speaking of transmissions, did you know that most Honda buyers who opt for 6MTs are colorblind? Actually, we're guessing at that last part, based on the fact that the manual-trans cars are available in far fewer shades of paint than their auto and CVT brethren. That's right, while your Accord Sport CVT can be had in eight rich shades of blue, red, and grayish-silverish tones, your buddy's Accord Sport 6MT can only be ordered in gray and black. Take that, enthusiast drivers!

There are, of course, any number of exterior and interior accessories that can be added by your smiling Honda dealer, too. We won't run through the full list, but we will say that the remote engine start system, with special key fob, seems like the best deal of the bunch at $400 before installation.

Just for fun, we've added a whole slew of 2013 Accord videos from the box-fresh advertising campaign below. Kick back and watch the car on the move, and then head over to the Honda site and build your dream Accord. It's a great day for midsized sedan geeks.

Honda Automobiles: Honda Gives Los Angeles Band, Monsters Calling Home, First National Spotlight

Up-and-coming Los Angeles band Monsters Calling Home recently recorded, performed and shot a music video inside their Honda vehicles. Last night, Honda gave the six-member band the surprise of a lifetime by getting them their unexpected big break as the special musical guest on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (weeknights at 12 a.m.).

This ruse began when Honda hired a few actors and rented a hotel ballroom for the band to perform for a few hundred Honda executives. But an "emergency meeting" kept all but two from showing up. What started off as the worst gig ever quickly turned into the best gig of the band's career when they learned that Honda arranged for them to be on the popular late-night program. Learn more about Honda's story with Monsters Calling Home on Honda's YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter pages.

Earlier this summer, Honda noticed Monsters Calling Home's "Fight to Keep" video featuring band members' Accord, CR-V and Fit. Believing that Honda was gathering and producing future Facebook content, the brand orchestrated this latest chapter of "Honda Loves You Back," an effort dedicated to Honda fans who have shared their love of the brand in incredible ways.

"Monsters Calling Home has a unique and engaging sound that we think will appeal to our fans. We turned their fun music video into an opportunity to show some appreciation for the band and all Honda fans and owners," said Tom Peyton, AVP, Advertising and Marketing at American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
Two years ago, Honda began showing some mutual love to connect with fans and current owners in surprising ways, like paying for Honda owners' parking, showing reciprocal gestures of love on Facebook and celebrating one million miles with a special owner.

"We're proud of Honda's success in social media with our 'Honda Loves You Back' campaign, and are honored to read about our dedicated owners' stories and to share their enthusiasm on Honda's social channels," said John Watts, Sr. Manager, Digital Marketing at American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

    Mississippi tops Automotive Misery Index

    Mississippi

Anyone who's ever laid claim to a set of keys can tell you car ownership is an expensive proposition, but according to CarInsurance.com, just how expensive can fluctuate significantly depending on where you call home. The site released a new study called "The Automotive Misery Index," which looks at each state's average household income compared to factors like the cost of fuel, the number of miles driven and the cost of full insurance coverage for a 2012 Honda Accord EX. Surprisingly enough, Mississippi ranked as the state with the highest misery index, thanks in part to low average household income, high average mileage and very expensive insurance.

Five states with the highest misery index:
    • Mississippi
    • Oklahoma
    • Louisiana
    • West Virginia
    • Montana
Five states with the lowest misery index:
    • New Hampshire
    • Alaska
    • Connecticut
